Christmas Coloring Contest in this issue Hey, Kids. Inhabitants from the Spiš region are called Spišaks in English, Spišáci in Slovak. The eastern dialects, which are spoken in the historical regions of Spiš, Šariš, Zemplín and Abov, resemble one another, but still have very distinct differences, one being that the Spiš dialect includes many words of German origin, due to the large number of Germans who migrated there during the Middle Ages, as the Hungarian king sought settlers to bring craft and mining skills to northern Hungary. The Spiš dialect belongs to the eastern group and Slovaks call that východoslovenské nárečia. Slovaks use three main regional dialects, which are divided by regions - western, central and eastern Slovak dialects. I never thought about it as a child, and just assumed that my grandparents and relatives were speaking a literary form of Slovak. The dialect which I heard as a child was one of the Spiš dialects (spišské nárečia, or spiština) of eastern Slovakia. Many of our readers share a similar background, and a large number of immigrants from Spiš settled in my hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. My entire family came from The Spiš Dialect (Spišské nárečie) what was Spiš county up to 1924, from the villages of Ruskanovce, Harichovce, and Richnava. Many of us are descendants of immigrants who came from the Spiš region of Slovakia, and most came from villages, not these cities, for there was more work in the larger towns. From north to south, it counts among its major cities the following: Stará Ľubovňa, Kežmarok, Poprad, Levoča, Spišská Nová Ves and Gelnica. In 1910, the region incorporated about 3,668 square kilometers, or 2279 square miles. The Spiš region is situated east and south of the High Tatras Mountains (Vysoké Tatry). Influences from abroad also played a major role in the formation of Slovak dialects. Separated by mountains and distances, the people of Slovakia molded their language to fit their needs.
